Want to be an Industrial Electrician?
The Job
An industrial electrician installs, maintains and tests electrical wiring, equipment (including machinery) both inside and outside of buildings, such as industrial premises, hospitals and factories.
What's the work like?
An industrial electrician will generally work within one of four areas: instrumentation; panel building; repairing and rewinding motors etc, or maintenance.
What skills and knowledge will I need?
You will need to be able to read instructions, interpret drawings, do some basic maths, and have good practical skills to work with hand and power tools.
What qualifications should I have?
You will be expected to have some GCSE qualifications but, as a minimum, you should aim to get Grade C (or above) in at least Maths, English and a Science.
What sort of hours would I have to work?
Depending on whether you work in one place or travel, you will probably have to work somewhere between 35 to 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday.
What opportunities are there?
There is always a need for good qualified electricians. Electrical contractors, builders, manufacturers and engineering companies are always looking for skilled craftsmen.
